David Jove - The Acid King
Here's David Jove (on the left), at my Birthday and Welcome Home from Oz party in 1991 - with that other Sixties man of intrigue, Donald Cammell, who wrote and co-directed Mick Jagger in the great classic rock and roll movie Performance. Also Donald's wife China and director Lizzie Borden.
I quietly enjoyed the irony that Donald never knew Jove was the infamous David Snyderman, known in some Rolling Stones books as David Schneidermann, who set up the bust at Keith Richards' country home, Redlands, which put Keith and Mick into the courts on drug charges and into jail for a few days.
I only found out because I took Marianne Faithfull to David's weird little cave off Fairfax one night very late for one last drink after a jolly reunion when we met up at a Stan Lee party. We were both in shock when he revealed his identity. She at seeing the man who changed all their lives so long ago. Me at finding out his secret past. Suddenly the paranoia, the fake names, the guns and drama made sense. That's why I wrote my novel, The Acid King. He'd spent his whole life hiding from exposure, running from whom?
