THIS IS MY NEW YEAR'S PRESENT TO YOU! THIS MADE MY online YEAR BY A LITTLE LESS THAN THREE HOURS. I was dismissing Google Alerts in gmail when I happened to click on the unlikely (as far as not being spam titled "Tiger Woods Girlfriends"...To my amamzement it was on Dipity (which I've noticed once, but not paid attention to since), but it was a Google-Type Document Combination Flipbook, Timeline, etc., Magic Embeddable Widget which upon further investigation as to why I was being alerted, revealed the majority of my Tiger Woods Videos inside. I had only today half-assedly dead-reckoned one of these in a post earlier today, constructed from whatever happened to be handy, which turned out to be: DEA Drug Questionaire PDF Job Application, Dr. George Nichopoulos 'Dr. Nick' Playing Card, and a Randomly Selected YouTube Video from Google's Genius but terribly confusing embarrassment of riches cache they call Google Documents. Truly Amazing Potential if one has all the time and Adderall to concentrate a hole through it (which is btw, my Indian Name). Pleased with the results and ready to get out of there before my head exploded, I saved it, shared it, copied the embed code, and posted it, as pretty as you please; and while it's nothing more than a 'first' forray into what will surely take a few hundred more clicks to know my way around, and sloppy as hell, I like its sense of unselfconsciousness (oh, and it also has a random screenshot I snapped from my third attempt at trying to login to Boing Boing's hopelessly fucked-up Wordpress or whate're Profile login-asco). Not just because my videos are included, but this is an incredible widget featuring God knows how many videos--Now I'll have to reconsider whatever it is that dippity does! Happy New Years again, my dear reader/vIdEOvICK rOLLERs. Labels for Years? A Question for Linguists?

When I was a teenager (waaaaay back in the 1980s) I occasionally wondered how society was going to refer to the years after 2000. I saw several possibilities including things like ‘twenty-0-six’ (a parallel construction with, say, nineteen-0-six) or even ‘two thousand and six.’ (I have never heard anyone use ‘twenty hundred’ to refer to 2000, though.) As 2000 approached, I got the sense that most people would use the second construction.
I then wondered how years after 2009 would be spoken about and it seems clear that two constructions are still competing for dominance: ‘twenty ten’ or ‘two thousand and ten’ (2010).
Three times in the past week, however, I have heard a different construction for the year 2010 on the radio. The label for 2010 that some are using in the Vancouver radio market is ‘two ten’ as in “Vancouver is hosting the Winter Olympics in two ten.” Should this surprise me? It seems like a reasonable contraction for ‘two thousand and ten’ but it does not represent a huge improvement on ‘twenty-ten’ as far as syllable conservation is concerned anyway.
Has anyone else heard this? If so, in which cities or areas? Any linguists interested in weighing in on the processes at work here?
