Ok folks... Prepare to breath easier or at least faster... If this is true... And I have to admit that I can't imagine that.... But if it's true, if EYES WIDE SHUT really is Kubrick's best film ever... Well... Then the movie will become an Icon that could very well tower over the Star Wars Episode One. If he felt this strongly about it, then I'm 100% dying enraptured by the mere thought of watching this film. What images will be burned into our minds? Terry Semel said in one article in the past day or two that the score for the film is mostly classical that Kubrick had already picked with just a couple of tweaks here and there... so what pieces of Classical Music will forever be linked to Kubrick's uncanny knack for visual orchestration. Oh my friends... happy times are ahead. We're so close to SWE1 and though it is tainted with the thought "it's his last film" we do have one final gift from Kubrick. Joy oh joy. Even if every other film this year were to blow chunks all over the place... well... It wouldn't be too bad.
You've probably been deluged with e-mails by the hundreds with regards to the tragic death of Stanley Kubrick. Like most people, I am saddened and shocked by the departure of this great visionary talent. You've probably already been e-mailed this, but I've just read an article in tonight's London "Evening Standard" that might, in part, interest you. It's by Alexander Walker, a leading film critic / writer here in the UK, and, according to his article, a "friend" of Kubrick's. I'll just report the excerpts that deal with "Eyes Wide Shut." I hope this is of a little interest...
'Stanley Kubrick, who died in his sleep early yesterday morning, leaves behind him what he had said to an associate only the day before was "my best film ever". Entitled Eyes Wide Shut, it is completely finished. It's producers, Warner Bros, intend to open it as planned in America on 16 July. Kubrick, aged 70, also left behind a reputation unparalleled in modern times as the most audacious, original and reclusive film-maker of his generation. Certainly the most exciting one I ever got to know and call a friend...
'... Now I reflect on an irony of a different kind: the knowledge that the film which the movie community, and even some closest to Stanley, thought he would "never" finnish, in fact got finished on the deadline - though that deadline had to be it's maker's death. What a leave-taking, what a memorial.'
I don't know how accurate this is, but at leasts it's a little comforting.
Lucifer.
