I picked this up via W+K (Shanghai)'s blog. The news clip below comes from Guangzhou TV (广州电视台 - Guǎngzhōu Diànshìtái) - the local channel of the host city for the 2010 Asian Games. We have already seen 361 Degrees campaign for the Games, but it is Nike's recent 3D outdoor adverts that have made headlines in China. The news clip (below) reports on Nike's latest outdoor creative which represents the sportswear giant's efforts to be part of the 2010 Asian Games. As you will see in the video, to make an impact in Guangzhou Nike have taken a dull looking 8-story residential flat and a nearby basketball court and revitalised them using some 3D artworking techniques. Youtube version Youku version The youngsters interviewed all seemed to appreciate the area's new look. One states that it gives "an old building new life" and another said "Guangzhou is a city, you need cultural diversity, we should be doing more creative things". What has caused some amusement is the old lady's reaction to what Nike have done. She is a little horrified and confused by the whole thing, stating the designs are 'too strange and discordant" with the local area. 
If you happen to be visiting Guangzhou for the Games and would like to see the outdoor ads, they are located just off Dongchuan Road (东川路 - Dōngchuān lù). Furthermore, if you are interested, the ads were created by Nike's Chinese advertising agency W+K (Shanghai Branch) and it took 10 workers and 4 days to create them. Much like the youth of Guangzhou, I think Nike and W+K have done a nice job, and hopefully we will see more creativity like this sprouting across Mainland China soon.

It is a world away from what many Westerners who believe to be the case for the children of China - with freedom being a such key issue in British-Chinese relations at the moment. I can only speak from my own experience, but I have met many Chinese youngsters who, through not wanting to go against their parents wishes, can not do what they want to do - more so in young Chinese women. However, many commentators have pointed out how urban Shanghainese teenagers, with their new found wealth, are indeed doing what they want to do. My question therefore is whether this is the case across the mainland, are China's youth given the freedom that campaigns like this one are trying to encourage? The Product Puma's Autumn / Winter collection based on the fashion of 1987 is the product of this campaign. Young people are encouraged to register to play the hunting game on Puma China's website. The Online Element The aim of the online game is to hunt down models to get the clothes they are wearing, and in playing the game they can win prizes. Having visited the site, the game is quite bizarre - for instance one level is called 'Zip or Fart' where players must work out whether the sound is indeed a zip or fart sound. hmm. Until then, music critics tended to trivial comments, condescension to appeal to young or complicity with industry. CAN I BORROW YOUR LINCOLN BOOKS? ![]() After years of will he or won't he make that Abraham Lincoln biopic, Steven Spielberg has decided yes in favor of "Yes, it will be my next film starting in Fall 2011." Though Liam Neeson has always been the man for the stovepipe hat, and has allegedly spent years researching for the part, he will no longer be playing it. He dropped out in July, claiming he is now too old for the part. Instead, Abraham Lincoln will be played by that master of mimicry, Daniel Day-Lewis. "Daniel Day-Lewis would have always been counted as one of the greatest of actors, were he from the silent era, the golden age of film or even some time in cinema's distant future. I am grateful and inspired that our paths will finally cross with Lincoln," said Spielberg in DreamWorks' official press release. And there's nothing much to say beyond that, which is why I let Spielberg say it. Day Lewis will knock it out of the park, and already looks good in stovepipe hats (see: Gangs of New York) so there's nothing to complain about. You can feel bad for Neeson (and I really do) but this choice certainly isn't a downgrade in talent. The rest of the film's stats remain the same.
