There’s a misconception that you can’t get pregnant on your period, but the truth is that you can get pregnant pretty much anytime you have unprotected sex. The fact is this: you can only get pregnant when you’re ovulating, but the ovulation cycles of teenagers are pretty wacky and ovulation and menstruation aren’t mutually exclusive. If there comes a point in time where you’re trying to get pregnant — when you’re in love and settled and ready for a baby — your doc will probably tell you that getting pregnant during your period is pretty difficult. But while you’re young, it’s possible.

But let’s look past the pregnancy risk for a sec.

I’m sorry for the tough love, but what were you thinking having sex without a condom? Even if you thought you couldn’t get pregnant during your period, which I’ve already pointed out is indeed possible, condoms are non-negotiable. They protect from STDs and a lot of nasty things that you don’t want to pick up from anyone, especially an  ex-boyfriend.

And let’s look past that for a sec too!  Um, why are you having sex with your ex? That has friends-with-benefits disaster written all over it. Attaching strings to a relationship that’s just been cut-off doesn’t help you, and could make the potential complications of gaining an STD or being pregnant so much harder. And since he’s not committed to you, he has no reason to not tell you about other partners he’s been doing and potentially contracting harmful STDs from.

So to recap: be careful having sex on your period and never, ever have sex without condoms (and add “don’t have sex with ex-boyfriends” to the list while you’re at it).

take care,
heather
