La formation est originaire de Dayton dans l'Ohio, devenu la capitale du Funk, grâce à l'ascension de groupes comme les Ohio Players, Slave ou encore Zapp. C'est grâce à un concours amateur que le groupe se retrouve sous contrats avec le label Curtom à Chicago.
Le groupe s'installe en Californie au cours de l'été 1972. Ils recrutent alors le batteur Fred Alexander de Liquid Funk ce qui permet au groupe de travailler avec la Motown Records. Maleureusement le premier album est un echec et Lakeside se voit contraint de rejoindre la firme ABC qui sort l'album suivant intitulé Lakeside Express en 1977. Quelques mois plus tard la maison MCA rachète ABC, le groupe se retrouve encore obligé de changer de maison et obtient un contrat avec Solar Records.
Le succès est enfin au rendez-vous avec le titre 'It's all the way live (part 1)' issu de l'album Shot of Love paru en 1978.
Malheureusement le second album Rough Riders ne rencontre pas le même accueil et reste dans l'ombre en cette année de 1979.
Le troisième album par contre en 1980, le recueil suivant Fantastic Voyage permet au groupe de revenir sur le devant de la scène avec le titre qui donne son nom à l'album 'Fantastic voyage' qui se place à la première place des classements blacks fin janvier 1981.
