It ran in primetime for four seasons before its historic move to CBS Late Night for the final 1985-86 season.
Entertainment Industry trade paper Daily Variety wrote of the second season opener, "The presence of William Shatner in the title role of T.J. Hooker catapults this by-the-numbers police show into first-class fare."

During the show's run, both William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy had the chance to direct, and Leonard guest-starred in an episode. Lisabeth even wrote one of the scripts!
Even though T.J. Hooker is not currently airing in syndication and it is not available on video, it still remains popular. There's even an extensive fan-based
T.J. Hooker website online headed up by John Kannenberg. The site features weekly polls, a comprehensive episode guide, photos, sound clips and a campaign to bring the show back on the air, dubbed the NO HOOKER NO PEACE campaign. The site is well worth the visit.

In an interesting twist of fate, Bill uses his expertise portraying a TV cop in the upcoming Warner Brothers feature film, Showtime. He plays himself in the film, and he's called upon to give advice to a veteran police officer (Robert De Niro) and a rookie cop (Eddie Murphy) who are cast in a reality-based TV program. The movie also stars Rene Russo. It opens in theaters nationwide on March 15, 2002.
