The explosive teenage garage rock of Pittsburgh proto-punks, the Swamp Rats

JDV
Wow, this is the most "punk" sounding proto-punk band I've ever heard. Normally proto-punk stuff is just amped- and fuzzed-up R&B or standard garage. I mean, their version of Hey Joe is basically just punk rock. Great stuff.

No, I hate you MORE: The decades-long feud between Morrissey & Robert Smith of The Cure

JDV
Morrissey seems to be unbearable as a person, but goddammit he's made some great music. Smith is probably a lovely person, and he's made a few good records. Luckily I don't have to hang out with either of them.
And it should be said, Mark E Smith would have taken the gun from Morrissey, hurled a barely intelligible yet brilliant invective, and then head straight to the pub.

After Tenant's Death, Incredible $28/Month Rent-Controlled Greenwich Village Apt. To Become $5,000/Month Apt.

JDV
As opposed to the masses of chronically over-educated and under-employed bros who all look identical in beards and boots? I'll take the former.

The Privilege Predicament - Robert Boyers

JDV
All cultures engage in warfare, it's just that the ones with superior technology have the capacity to wreak the most havoc. You can bet any culture, given such tools, would do the same.
JDV
Nah, there's always a lingua franca, and not because of "privilege," but because it provides a common way of communicating between disparate groups of people, so that the means of communication is a given, and the substance of the communication can be the focus. Like or not, dude. My default speech cadence, much to my chagrin, is basically California surfer dude, because that's where I'm from. I curtail that shit in professional situations, otherwise I don't sound credible when I'm proposing the company spend X amount of dollars on our department.
JDV
You started your first comment with the words "white tears." That phrase is meant to discredit whatever argument is being made as irrelevant based on the person's race.
JDV
"You get to decide how you feel."
Another classic. You speak in memes, dude. And this particular one utterly absolves you from making a convincing argument. You characterized and dismissed the writer's viewpoint based on his race. Outside of academia and certain corners of the internet where perceived victimhood absolves (that word again!) one from ever being racist, how is that not racist?
JDV
I liked Black Panther. Just disappointed you felt the need to trot out the ol' "white tears" chestnut. It, like its conservative version, "liberal tears," is a non-sequitor meant to short circuit actual dialogue. Bonus points for being racist, though.

Why I Quit Google to Work for Myself

JDV
Hope if works out for you and everything, but from the perspective of a dude in his late 40s who's had some experience with the corporate world and the promotion racket, to have as your goal "to get promoted" is coming at it the wrong way. Trying to reverse engineer almost any life goal most often leads to disappointment. Instead, do work you enjoy, do it well, don't worry about promotions (especially since you're already making decent money), and believe it or not, they will come. Maybe not exactly on your preferred schedule, and maybe other people whom yo feel aren't as deserving will get promoted first. Just don't pay any attention to that crap. It's a sucker's game.

Nirvana playing ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ live for the very last time

JDV
We got a promo copy of the single somehow and I remember us playing it over and over at a party each time someone came in the door. It's silly but it really did feel life-changing. First and only time a song had that impact on me. Can't really listen to it now, it's been so overplayed, but still, it's a damn good song. Nirvana in general has less staying power than a lot of other bands from that era, for me anyway. But boy I sure loved them back then.

Blistering footage of a young AC/DC blowing the roof off the sucker in 1978

JDV
"I am hot, and when I'm not...I'm cold as ice."
Sorry, that's effin' poetry. Using "I am" instead of "I'm" the first time, then the contraction the next two times; the rhyme in the middle; the pause before the last phrase which thematically contradicts the first. Concise as fuck, like William Carlos Williams concise, packing in a lot of meaning in few words. Nasty AF. I've always thought it's the best opening lyric in rock.

Raw footage of AC/DC killing it at an Australian high school 40 years ago (& Bon Scott’s bagpipes!)

JDV
Like gravity and the speed of light, it's a universal constant that Bon-era AC/DC is the best rock n roll band in history.

If St. Vincent is playing your city on her current Fear the Future tour GO!!!

JDV
I'm with you. She's someone I should like on paper, but I find her more like a cut-rate Gaga (whom I like a lot), with zero soul. Even her tour name, Fear the Future, is really lame. There are a ton of similarly artsy performers with a lot more to say musically and a lot more clever conceptually. She is a really good guitarist, though.

Purity and Prejudice | Samuel D. James

JDV
Do you agree or disagree that the sexual revolution has for the most part been harmful to women and dispiriting to most men? Or that the decoupling of sex from marriage, or at least a long-term commitment, has turned out to be mostly confusing and the cause of much personal turmoil?

Cowboys, Pop Stars, Droogs, and Artists sporting the ‘hat that won the west’

JDV
The bowler also figured prominently (and sexily!) in The Unbearable Lightness of Being as a sort of symbol of sexual abandonment/control.

Hairy moments: The deep roots of women’s hair history

JDV
"This beautiful manicure shot is from Bordentown School and is a striking example of a photo that really captures how two young women can connect without any necessity for white structures"
I agree the shot is beautiful, but what about beauty salons and/or the act of personal grooming and bonding in these places is so inherently white that you felt the need to describe a photo of two black women in such a way?

An amazing collection of classic straight edge fliers

JDV
I see Mr. Seconds quite often around Sacramento, he does the singer-songwriter thing now. Nice enough guy, but still quite certain.

Illegal immigration on border back at Obama levels

JDV
Obama was President in 2012, 2013 and 2014, when immigration levels were lower than they are now.

Metal Gods: Rob Halford of Judas Priest fronts Black Sabbath in 1992

JDV
Halford sounds great here. He's my favorite consistent metal singer. But Ozzy had that something about his voice. At his peak, there was no one better, in my opinion. Like that 1970 footage from France. Unbelievable.

Leo DiCaprio snorting coke ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ wall art is the feel-good Xmas gift of the season

JDV
I was fully aware of the fact that the movie was meant as a cautionary tale, with Scorcese critiquing a very American type of excess and folly. And yet, the dude had a blast while it lasted. Anti-whatever movies rarely work, even (or especially) when there's so much talent involved. Just the fact of the film's existence tacitly glamorizes whatever they're trying to warn us against. It doesn't help that everyone (except Jonah Hill) in the movie is great-looking.

Fewer Boys Is Better . . . for Boys | Mark Bauerlein

JDV
It's not about keeping women down, it's about catering education towards academic success, period. All-girls schools should have the same opportunities, rigor and focus as all-boys schools. They should have the same financial endowments, as well. It's pretty clear that coed classrooms for teens hitting puberty are quite distracting for both sexes. I think the ideal schools are those that have same-sex classrooms and coed extra-curricular functions.
I say this as someone who went to public schools and have sent my kids to public schools. As for myself, I didn't have a choice, so I don't sweat that, but I do regret not sending my kids to same-sex schools.
