This took two hours to compile from one

I respectfully dedicate its labor to Dave the Spazz and the other Elvis Freaks represented here from whom this information was lovingly culled for its piquant insanity and classis crazy.  I wish most of you were still around for me to send this to you, but I'm afraid last time I checked last night, most of you had ridden whichever version of the SS Titanic you ultimately fated yourself for when you booked your initial voyage de fou de Elvis with those bizarre spammy SiteHosts.  So just thank The Perfect American for acting as your little Internet Archive from which you may now defenestrate yourself having found yourself again.

Polygamy boosts mouse sperm

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 11:53 PM PST

Polygamy boosts mouse sperm fitness

After only 12 generations of practising polygamy male mice are much more fertile than their monogamous brethren.

That is the conclusion of the first study to provide concrete evidence for the evolutionary theory which proposes that competition for mates will increase male fertility, says Leigh Simmons at the University of Western Australia, Australia.

House mice (Mus domesticus) can swap between being polygamous and monogamous. To see if this had an impact on their sperm quality, Simmons and his colleague Renee Firman created polygamous and monogamous breeds and compared their fertility.

For the "monogamous" mice, they paired 18 males with 18 female mice, then took two offspring from each monogamous couple – one male and one female – and bred them with the offspring of another monogamous couple. The experiment was repeated for 12 generations.

For "polygamous" mice, each female was sequentially mated with three males, and this, too, was repeated for 12 generations. At the end of breeding, all mice were the same size and weight.

Sperm success

Next came the ultimate test: would sperm from polygamous males be more successful at producing offspring than sperm from monogamous mice?

To find out, 16 females in heat were each mated with a different monogamous male, quickly followed by a polygamous male. The experiment was reversed in another group of 16 females: polygamous males were mated first. Embryos from the 32 females were then genetically tested to determine paternity.

The team found that polygamous males produced more offspring in both experiments: they fathered 76 per cent of the offspring when they mated first and 58 per cent when they mated last.

Simmons and Firman think they know why the polygamous males are more fertile. In previous experiments, they had analysed the sperm quality of the mice after only eight generations of mating. Males from the polygamous lines produced more sperm with better motility than monogamous males.

The sperm might also be getting bigger. Using previous literature Maximilian Tourmente of the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid, Spain, compared the testicle mass of 226 species with their sperm length. In general, animals with larger testes had longer sperm.

Big tests, big sperm

Testes are known to be larger in polygamous animals, so Tourmente reasoned polygamous mating selects for longer sperm.

"As sperm become longer, sperm swimming velocity increases," says Tourmente. Since sperm speed is a major factor in successful fertilisation, "this explains why it is targeted by sexual selection so efficiently", he says.

While Simmons did not see larger sperm in his polygamous mice after eight generations, he says it could be "the next step" in their evolution. "These mice only had a few generations to adapt, perhaps in the following generations we will begin to see larger sperm," he says.

Russell Bonduriansky, an evolutionary biologist at the University of New South Wales, Australia, says, these studies provide "strong evidence" that the appearance of sperm "evolves quite rapidly" in response to intense sperm competition.

Who're Naming the Worst Hôtels in the World? (One-0-One)

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 10:44 PM PST

I certainly did not want to be Naming the Worst hotel when I thought of this, and I feel a little terrible that now I am made to feel inadequate for the five-second shelf-life of this ODDee Post.

What does Oddee think is the worst, most pathetic THEME BLOG FOR THE LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB???

HERE'S MY VOTE:

ODDEE!

Worst hotel Naming One
Worst hotelier namings How are you going to argue against that?
This is an hotel where according to the name you want to return again and again.
It does not seem to be a very nice hotel to stay!
One might think that the owners of this hotel in Malta would have thought to check the name to ensure that it is not giving people the wrong impression.
And where's Malta? Malta has written to say that it is actually in an hotel-restaurant.
Naming:
How do you argue against Naming SOMETHING? Or worse than that, HOTeLs?
You Can Get More welcoming in an hotel, where the name is bad than not. If you want to return they remember your name, no matter.
...and an Inn.
There's an Inn, I've heard tell, located in an historic downtown, built on an historic rural Aztec pyramid in Colorado with replicas of antiques and Victorian American architecture...The Name?  NONE!
So don't tell me about naming the worst HOTeL.
Hell, I certainly do not want to hear abrupt critique on Naming worst hotels!
Is that supposed to be the beach?!  IS THAT SUPPOSED TO BE YOUR WIFE?
It does not seem to be a very nice hotel to stay!  IT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A VERY PRETTY WIFE!
Naming the worst hotel, you might think,
"Hats off to the owners of the hotel in Malta--Who would have thought to check the name so that it does not give people a false impression?"
And that's exactly what I'm saying.
Where's the fun in that?
Note Malta has written to say he is actually in the restaurant of the Worst hotel in the world, so it is impossible for him to be included in this list (he said, google the quote about eating in the eiffel tower).
I asked him what it was called, but he told me he couldn't tell me...NOOOOO--like that song Certain Girl by Ernie K-Do!)
Can you argue otherwise?
You can not get more welcoming THAN THIS Quebec hotel where the UN returns again and again...
WHAT'S THE FREAKIN' UN'S interest?
OHHHH!
Centrally located in historic rural Colorado and built in Victorian style...I GET IT.
Very nice hotel stay!

In the Spring - Migrant Workers Sing Their Hearts Out

“In the Spring" was just another pop song until these two migrant workers in Beijing recorded their rendition.  The emotion in this video is real, and powerful. (“[Original singer] Wang Feng's version…can't even come close to evoking any emotional response,” one comment on the video says. “Only the people on the bottom rungs of the social ladder can sing truly about their lives, their hopes, and their souls!”) Many people found the singing of the migrant workers all the more powerful because of the hardships they face – the lack of health insurance, access to education for their children, or basically any social safety net. The chorus of the song evokes this especially:

如果有一天我老无所依
请把我留在在那时光里
如果有一天我悄然离去
请把我埋在这春天里

If one day I should grow old and have nowhere left to turn,
Then leave me in those younger days.
If some day I should slip away, never to return,
Then bury me here in the spring.

The migrant workers' version catapulted the two singers, Wang Xu and Liu Gang, to internet stardom. They've since recorded the song several times, made an official music video, and even performed with the original singer, pop star Wang Feng. The official music video might be higher quality, but nothing matches the feeling in the first video the duo uploaded. Frankly, we'd much rather listen to their version than the original one. Well done, guys!

TanTe - The Song From Heaven and Its Overwhelming Effects

Something about that first video got stuck in the brains of Youku users, which led to the craziness you can see in the second. The original video is a song by Gong Linnuo, with a fast but catchy melody and lyrics that are, well, mostly gibberish. Even so, there's something pretty compelling about it, apparently compelling enough to get Youku users out of their seats and into their full-body Pokemon suits to dance and sing along in front of their cameras. In fact, the song has become so popular it's going to be put on as part of this year's 春晚 Chinese Spring Festival Gala, with more people and more instruments for added craziness.

The Month's Most Viewed
Hot Mama - The Housewife singing with Baby Bottle

This month, netizens were stunned by the emergence of a new singing superstar. Or, at least, the emergence of a girl with the uncanny ability to imitate some of China's most famous singing superstars. But what's really impressive is her extreme enthusiasm as she dances around like a madwoman, singing into an empty baby bottle. Her sometimes pained, crazy expressions make her look like she is possessed by some sort of demon (perhaps the sort that cruelly would force its host to sing a medley of pop songs and upload the video to Youku). But demonic possession or not, the video is infectious and it will make you laugh. It's been viewed nearly five million times already and it's still making the rounds!

Blue Dream & The Red Scarf - Youku Premieres Celebrates the Holidays with New Works from Grassroot Talents

As one of the many ways Youku is engaging with original "grassroots" filmmakers, we're now offering Youku Premiere, a service that gives student films and other quality user-generated content the virtual red-carpet treatment during this holiday season. One of the short films making its online debut is ' Blue Dream ' (subtitled), a touching short feature from balinghou ("twenty something") director Wu Xingjian. 'Blue Dream' tells the story of two fresh college graduates trying to close the gap between their youthful dreams of fame and success and their low-paying, demeaning jobs. It's a problem that tens of thousands of Chinese college graduates face every year. Wu has created a moving, memorable little sketch of the realities of many young college graduates' lives, and judging by some of the comments on the film -- "here's to those young people who won't let life wear them down," says one commenter -- viewers see something of themselves in it..

At the other end of the scale is "The Red Scarf,"  a short cartoon from students at the animation school of the Communication University of China that deals with you thful dreams of another variety entirely: the adventures and misadventures of a manga-obsessed primary school student who imagines himself to be a teacher-defeating superhero and kung-fu master, instead of the pint-sized Young Pioneer that he really is. Almost 600,000 people have watched this since it was posted three months ago, suggesting that netizens see at least a little of themselves in this one, too

Au Revior Taipei - Widescreen Glory

Cinephiles rejoice! We've been hard at work making the film-watching experience on Youku even better -- first with HD movies, and now with widescreen letterbox display as an option for all of our HD titles. You’re going to love the way this looks, we guarantee. One of the movies getting the full HD/letterbox treatment is Au Revoir Taipei (一页台北), a slick film following the story of Kai, a young man in Taipei who wants to be in Paris with his girlfriend. "If Paris is the city of love,” he asks at one point, “then what is Taipei the city of?" But in just one night, he discovers there's more to Taipei than he thought -- and that's all we're telling you. If you can speak or read Chinese, check out this beautifully shot film in all of its pretty wide screen glory. Youku users certainly have been – nearly half a million times so far.

Viral Ad of the Month

China Mobile - Incredible Customer Service

The award for customer service above and beyond the call of duty goes to China Mobile and the endlessly patient ladies on their customer service line, as portrayed in this low-quality recording of a completely insane phone call. Sounding decidedly drunk, the caller--clearly a native Chinese speaker--tells the poor customer service lady he only speaks English. She asks why he didn't just call their English customer service line, but he continues to harass her for some time, asking ridiculous questions and responding to every solution she offers him with “Nope. Nuh-uh.” It's hard to imagine what could make China Mobile's customer service sound any better than listening to them patiently put up with this jerk for ten minutes. I hope they gave that poor woman a raise!

Durex – Not Just For Balloon Animals Anymore

In this clever little viral ad for Durex, a "post-80s kid with nothing better to do" (per the video's title) demonstrates that condoms are good for more than making impromptu water balloons and waterproofing microphones, as he fashions a short rope out of condoms and proceeds to use it to tow a minivan with the parking brake disengaged. It's probably best not to try this one at home.

Starbucks super-sizes its swill

via Dogmeat

(Best title of the day from nma.tv)

Starbucks is introducing a new drink size in selected US locations this week, dubbed "Trenta." It will be the largest size offered by the popular coffee chain to date.

starbucks grab final Starbucks super sizes its swill

Though "Trenta" translates to "thirty" in Italian, the new cup size will hold 31-ounces of liquid. This will surely add more confusion to an already cryptic menu.

The change comes with some health benefits. Only iced beverages will be offered in the Trenta size, some of which contain only 90 calories maximum.

Starbucks recently unveiled a new logo that distances the company from its coffee-only image, as there is a plan in the works to add beer and wine to the menu.

No matter the quality of their products, Starbucks continues to charge premium prices. The in-store wi-fi, however, remains free, and many customers take advantage of it.

Can the Starbucks spell ever be broken?

"My name is Dr Frederick Treves. I am a doctor at the London Hospital. One day in 1884, I saw a picture in the window of a shop near the hospital. I stopped in front of the shop and looked at the picture. At first I felt interested, then I felt angry, then afraid. It was a horrible, ugly picture. There was a man in the picture, but he did not look like you and me. He did not look like a man. He looked like an elephant. I read the writing under the picture. It said, 'Come in and see the Elephant Man. 2 pence.' I opened the door and went in. There was a man in the shop. He was a dirty man in an old coat with a cigarette in his mouth. Only whites live in King William's Town itself, of course. Woods, in his white Mercedes, drove through the black township, a few kilometres from the centre of the town, on his way to the address Dr Ramphele had given him. The houses were small and miserable, but the surrounding hills, covered with acacia trees, were beautiful. Woods drove on, surprised that he was meeting a banned person at an address in the white town. He found the quiet, wide street with trees on both sides. The address was an old church, with small trees around it, and bits of broken fence. Woods parked across the street and stared at it for a moment. He noticed two security policemen under a tree not far away. They were obviously Biko's 'minders' and Woods smiled and waved at them. Biko needed watching, Woods believed, because he aimed to create separate black organizations, which Woods thought dangerous. " K1 =87.93%

" The Canadian Down Syndrome Society is right to be concerned about a proposal that all pregnant women be routinely tested to determine whether the fetuses they're carrying have Down syndrome. The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada no doubt has the best of intentions in recommending the program, and even the Down Syndrome Society has no problem with expectant mothers getting all the information they need to make decisions about their pregnancy. The key word, however, is 'all.' The society fears - and with reason - that doctors are far too quick to highlight the burdens of raising a child with Down syndrome without ever acknowledging the joys and rewards that such children can bring to a family. Doctors, the society says, never fail to mention the heart problems and premature dementia that can come with Down syndrome, but often ignore other, more positive, aspects of the condition. What's also often left out are the positive prognoses. Most children with Down syndrome go on to live full and fulfilling lives." K1 =83.04%

" Another option to save the African elephant would be an exclusive marketing scheme in which ivory was traded. The core of such a system would have to be an agreement between exporting countries who are committed to managing their herds at sustainable levels and importing countries who were both willing and able to enforce import controls requiring them to accept ivory from approved exporting countries alone. Ivory could be taken for registration to a single point of export controlled and supervised by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). The CITES center would accept ivory only from states deemed to have met strict conservation criteria. Once exported, ivory samples would be randomly tested at regular intervals to determine their place of origin. Ivory from anywhere other than approved states would be confiscated and the importing nation fined in the first instance, and suspended from the scheme in the case of repeated offenses. This scheme might start small initially, and later be expanded if successful. Such expansion could be implemented by a resolution within the CITES framework. One problem is that actual enforcement of such schemes is by no means automatic. Considerations like the corruption or powerlessness of officials, ignorance, and apathy must be fully addressed in the program's implementation for them to be successful." K1 =70.83%

" MORE magazines documenting the ups and, better, the downs of celebrities are sold in Britain than anywhere else, relative to the size of its population. The reasons given for the countrys vast appetite for celebrity vary from the historical (Brits like having a class system and have created a new one on the embers of the old) to the sociological (people no longer know their neighbours well enough and so gossip about famous lives instead). The result is benign, most of the time. British celebrity culture is tolerant: ethnic minorities and homosexuals feature prominently. And it is democratic: no discernible talent is needed to enter the aristocracy of celebrity. Not this week, though, when the unpleasant, even racist, treatment of Shilpa Shetty, an Indian actress, on Celebrity Big Brother, a reality-television show, has been at the top of news bulletins. " The key to understanding Lord Black, who is set to go on trial next March, is that for him business has never been more than the means to an end. It was a lesson he absorbed as a boy from his wealthy and cynical father, who taught him that greed, arrogance and unscrupulousness were the way of the world. At the same time, the precocious young Conrad learned from his passion for history that real heroes were permitted to flout rules designed by the mediocre to shackle them. Mr Bower portrays Lady Black as every bit as much of a chancer as the husband over whom she still exerts a powerful hold, both sexual and intellectual. Marrying for the fourth time at the age of 51, the haughty, but always insecure, Ms Amiel believed she had married a man of unlimited means. Given free rein to an extravagance she admitted has no bounds, Lady Black encouraged her husband to befriend New York's super-rich elite. With their four houses in choice locations, their armies of butlers and the pair of private jets that stood ready to whisk them to the next celebrity party or shopping expedition, they were accepted at their own valuation."
