After a night of pas­sion, Lil­lian asks Ziegfeld to put her in his next show: But my dear, he asks, what would I do with you? You can nei­ther sing, dance nor act? Thats easy, honey, Lil­lian replies, make me a star!=E 2 Which is ex­act­ly what he does, declar­ing: If the girl cant carry the show, then the show will have to carry the girl! The most elab­o­rate mu­si­cal num­ber in the tele­movie, shot on the largest sound­stage on the stu­dio lot, cen­tered around a 60-foot stair­case, topped by a 10-foot foun­tain which was spout­ing bub­bles made by four ma­chines, while 10000 bal­loons were float­ing in the air. There were also four six-foot swans made out of cot­ton bat­ting, all cre­at­ed by Oscar Win­ning Pro­duc­tion De­sign­er John De­Cuir [The King and I, Cleopa­tra, Hello,Dolly!]. A State­ment for Non-Ex­clu­sion -- Dr. Ng Poon Chew (1866-1931 **View LIVE, May 9, 2007 == see Remembering1882.​org for de­tails** In recog­ni­tion of the 125th year since the pas­sage of the na­tion's first im­mi­gra­tion law, the Chi­nese Ex­clu­sion Act of 1882, CHSA pre­sents this sneak pre­view of "A State­ment for Non-Ex­clu­sion," a mu­se­um the­ater work-in-progress by CHSA Artist in Res­i­dence Char­lie Chin. In the early twen­ti­eth cen­tu­ry, San Fran­cis­co-based news­pa­per ed­i­tor Ng Poon Chew was the pub­lic face of op­po­si­tion to Chi­nese Ex­clu­sion and its abus­es. The learned rev­erend took part in local and na­tion­al con­fer­ences de­bat­ing the fu­ture of US im­mi­gra­tion pol­i­cy, and, in ad­di­tion to pub­li­ciz­ing par­tic­u­lar im­mi­gra­tion cases in his news­pa­per, the Chung Sai Yat Po (Chi­nese-West Daily), brought new in­for­ma­tion to light by au­thor­ing the fact-filled dossiers, The Treat­ment of the Ex­empt Class­es of Chi­nese in the Unit­ed States (1908), and, co-au­thored with Irish Amer­i­can Patrick J. Healy, 1905's A State­ment for Non-Ex­clu­sion.
