In 1977 John Travolta was instantly catapulted to stardom by his portrayal of Tony Manero, the directionless young paint store clerk who lived only for his weekend dancing. Here was a character who many of us could identify with; problems with family relationships, no money, lack of opportunity, yet a fierce desire to achieve something. So towards the beginning of the film we see Tony strutting his stuff on the dance floor at the Odyssey 2001 with his girlfriend Annette. However Tony's quest for excellence in the one area of his life leads him to reject his old partner and court the attentions of the more sophisticated (and better dancer) Stephanie, who ends up as his partner at the dance contest. Through Stephanie Tony starts to see the possibility of getting somewhere in life; out of the rut, the paint store - maybe if he only applied the same determination and passion that he devoted to the disco to the rest of his life........

Story

(cunt. from above).......

The film deals with Tony's rejection of Annette and his ensuing stormy relationship with Stephanie; all set against the background of his family's traumas and the very real problems of his neighbourhood friends. The undercurrent throughout the film is the escape from the drudgery of the 1970's working class life through the swirling lights  and pulsating rhythms of  disco (typified by the Bee Gees soundtrack).

Saturday Night Fever quickly became a cultural landmark of the 1970's thanks to the Bee Gee's music and the figure of Tony Manero's immersion into contemporary popular culture.
