Nick Lowe and his father Drain Lowe. June, 2002, England. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jimherrington/
Drain was an officer in the RAF. For years Nick had told me fantastic stories about his father's WW2 exploits, one of which was getting part of his bomber's cockpit blown off and having to crash land in the ocean. At night. In winter. Before crashing, they managed to stay up in the air long enough to become disoriented, what with the navigation controls being compromised, and they thought they had crashed off the coast of German occupied France. One of the guys in the cockpit died, but Drain and another survived and managed to swim ashore and hide in the sand dunes. They heard voices and thought, "Germans!", so they kept quiet... Until they recognized that the voices sounded Irish. They'd crashed on the coast of Ireland.
More to come...
