The first step was finding the gown. As I am the first Australian debutante, I chose a fellow Aussie, designer Collette Dinnigan. Picking the dress was easy. For me it was, as the French say, a “coup de foudre”. (The lingo is rubbing off on me.) The next task was accessories, the most important of which was my human handbag. Which cavalier would I be draping over my arm? Unfortunately (or fortunately, I’m not sure!), my boyfriend was unable to attend so I had a posse of charming Frenchmen to choose from. The weekend in Paris then became an endless flurry of hot hair rollers, make-up, trying on diamonds, couture fittings and fashion shoots. We posed, we pranced, we danced and kept going all night despite the crippling foot pain. Balancing on a box in stilettos for two and a half hours for the group photo shoot and waltz-whirling definitely took a toenail toll!
For three days I’ve shared giggles and gossip with the daughters of Academy award winners Clint Eastwood and Forrest Whitticker, an Indian Princess, and a bouquet of English roses, including Kitty Spencer, Lord Cowdray’s niece Carinthia Pearson and Angelica Hicks, the great-granddaughter of Lord Mountbatten. It was a United Nations of debutantes from countries as diverse as Ethiopia, France, the Philippines, Venezuela, and China and many more. But we all spoke a common language – fashion. All decked out in couture, we made our entrance into the glittering ballroom and were launched into society. As exciting as this parade proved to be, my main preoccupation was not tripping over my bejewelled train and falling flat on my red face. A few waltzes later and we swapped our £6,000 gowns for £6 mini skirts to hit Paris’ hotspots. Some people have said that it’s old fashioned for girls to “come out”. (My mother is particularly worried that it means she will have to “go in”.) But none of us is waiting to be rescued by Prince Charming. We are all students, with academic aspirations. But just because we’re standing on our own two stilettos, doesn’t mean we don’t want to be twirled around the ballroom in them. Also, with so much misogyny in the world, le bal is a celebration of womanhood. We are not 'coming out'. We’re simply saying “Bonsoir! Here we are!” It is also a means of raising money for Enfants d’Asie - a girls help girls charity, supporting less advantaged young women in the developing world. Of course couture and diamonds is every girl’s dream but the best part of the experience was making so many friends from all over the globe. In only one weekend I felt like I got to know all 23 girls well and will definitely be keeping in touch…. And hopefully receiving a lot of invites to exotic mansions worldwide! (Hint hint….)
