Frames from the Edge is a wonderful display of Helmet Newton's breath taking fashion, nude, commercial and portrait photography. Besides the thousands of outstanding still photographs that are shown, the documentary is conventionally narrated but grounded with substantial interviews of both Helmsmen himself and many other subjects, friends and critics capturing how and why and who the photographs are, when they are not rooted in his idiosyncratic methods of capturing a moment. I found it flipping around on the TV at 3 in the morning and couldn't tear myself from the tube until it had finished. I am a photographer but none the less it is fascinating to learn what a photographer goes through to create a print in which he has visioned before the actual shoot. And, I think you'll find the erotic subject matter (of most of his photographs), not only, well, erotic, but after a while you almost become desensitized to the nudity but in an equilibrating way because you really do find yourself seeing the nude in term of texture and shape, light etc...well until near the end we see the setup and shooting session of a woman in the act of riding the back fin of an old 50's black Cadillac-hummer, well, i still think that you'll enjoy his photography, and boy do you see a lot of it. fantastic stuff.

After the great success of the exhibition "A gun for hire" at the Helmut Newton Foundation in 2005 with Newton's fashion photos from the last 20 years the current show "Helmut Newton: Fired" focuses on his editorial work for fashion magazines of the 1960s and 1970s like Elle, Queen, Nova or Marie Claire.

"Fired from French Vogue: In 1964 I was commissioned by Queen magazine to photograph the revolutionary collection by Courrèges. The fashion editor, Claire Rendlesham, decided on a journalistic scoop showing only my Courrèges photos and excluding all other fashion houses from her Paris report. When Queen landed on the desk of Françoise de Langlade (then associate editor-in-chief of French Vogue) she hit the roof. I was called into her office, we had a tremendous row, she accused me of treachery and disloyalty and wanted to know why I had not told her about this scoop. I pointed out to her that I had no exclusive contract with Vogue, and it was of course understood that I would never divulge any ideas developed by French Vogue to Queen or vice versa. So I was kicked out of the hallowed halls of Vogue only to return in 1969 when Francine Crescent was appointed editor-in-chief. During Francine's regime, I did what I considered my best fashion work. Playboy is getting ready to bare its assets.
The original men's skin magazine - founded years before archrival Penthouse - opens an exhibit of photographs, art and manuscripts this week to arouse interest in an auction planned for December.
"They have a tremendous amount of artwork," said Steven Marascia, a stock analyst covering Playboy Enterprises for Anderson & Strudwick in Richmond, Va. "If you take it and sell it, it generates cash, and that cash goes back into the corporation."
Some items date back as much as 50 years ago, when Hugh Hefner started Playboy in Chicago. Many of the artists, writers and photographers Hefner hired went on to become famous. The collection to be sold includes their work - photographs by Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts, art by LeRoy Neiman, cartoons by Shel Silverstein and Gahan Wilson and original drafts by Jack Kerouac, Ian Fleming and Vladimir Nabokov.
Own a Vargas Girl
Bidders also can buy originals of the "Little Annie Fanny" cartoon series, as well as the magazine's signature Vargas Girl drawings by pinup artist Alberto Vargas. Photographs of Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot and Bo Derek also will be available.
Playboy officials, who scheduled a press conference for Wednesday to announce the exhibit, declined to comment.
The magazine is billing the auction - to be held at Christie's in Rockefeller Center - as part of its 50th anniversary celebration. CEO Christie Hefner will appear at the press conference, which kicks off the exhibit. The items will be on view until Aug. 8 and then go on a road show. The auction is set for Dec. 17.
But the sale serves as more than a celebration. Like other adult magazines, Playboy has come under pressure from the Internet and lad magazines, such as Maxim and Stuff, that cater to young men. The auction will help Playboy raise money for its other ventures, such as Internet and cable TV broadcasting.
"If they're going to grow their earnings, they have to do that outside the magazine," Marascia said.
The auction is Playboy's second. A sale in California last year brought in $1.3 million, of which $700,000 went to Playboy, sources said. An original watercolor Vargas Girl fetched $32,000, a LeRoy Neiman painting went for $29,125 and a collection of Helmut Newton photographs of Kristine DeBell sold for $21,075.
Vast collection
"The Playboy collection was vast. We had a lot to choose from," said Peter Loughrey of Bonhams & Butterfield Auctioneers, which conducted the sale.
The auction brought in 20% more money than expected, a Bonhams exec said.
Playboy's corporate collection is reported to include 5,000 drawings, paintings, illustrations and other objects of art. Up to 75 pieces will be sold in December's auction, according to a Christie's spokeswoman.
"There have been some fairly important photographers who've worked at Playboy," said Richard Frey, chairman of the Fine Art Division of the International Society of Appraisers.
As for Vargas, he is "coming back with some popularity right now," Frey said. "It's high-end. It's good art."

Lot NotesThe son of a wealthy Berlin button manufacturer, Helmut Newton began his career in photography in the studio of Yva (Else Simon) in 1936. With the rise of Nazism, Newton fled Germany for Singapore, finally settling in Australia in 1940, where he served in the Army until the end of the second world war. After completing his military service, Newton opened a small studio in Melbourne and worked there as a fashion photographer, achieving increasing success and critical recognition. He moved to Paris in 1961 and became a regular contributor to Paris Vogue and other high fashion magazines. From the mid 1970s onwards, Newton also shot a number of memorable subjects for Playboy, an obvious association given his credit of having introduced sex to fashion photography. Newton, however, would disagree with this analysis. In Playboy's September 1987 issue, he stated that he considered himself "...too raunchy" for the magazine. Indeed, his overtly erotic imagery is never straightforward; it always includes a wealth of complex, often fetishistic motifs and subtexts.
