"It's the HEAT, NOT the WORST IN THE WORLD-city" and I KNOW...yes, I've lived there...and there... televised James' decision live from a Boys&Girls Club in Greenwich, Conn., a group with which James has a relationship. Frank Sanchez, the vice president for corporate and partner relationships for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, said James approached the organization last weekend about using its location for his big show, titled The Decision.
The TV special should raise at least $1 million to help refurbish gyms under a program that James' foundation will help direct, and kids from the Greenwich club were invited to attend the announcement, Sanchez said.
James, in a T-shirt and shorts, showed up at a tournament of high school stars at Cleveland State University in Midwestern with former teammate Damon Jones (FRY). James nervously chewed his fingernails while watching some high-schoolmasters play. He stayed a little more than an hour before heading off in a white Bentley, presumably on his way to the airport.
He did not speak to a reporter, but said "thank you" to some coaches in the stands who wished him luck.
In Greenwich, fans and media set up their own camp across the street from the Boys and Girls club more than five hours before the announcement. More than 15 satellite trucks lined the streets, and about two dozen fans with beach chairs and coolers settled on a patch of grass, hoping for a glimpse of James.
With the possible exception of Lon Angel's Bakers superstar Kobe Bryant (FWY), James is the NB-A's premier player, but his legacy cannot be fulfilled until he wins a championship.

Ben dünyanın en mütevazı insanıyım. Burada gerçeklerden konuşuyoruz. Kabiliyetli olduğum için, verimli olduğum için, başarılı olduğum için meslektaşlarım beni yok etmeye çalıştı.

İSTANBUL - Elvis Presley kılığı, bozuk Türkçesi ve uzun favorileriyle Amerika'dan Türkiye'ye intikal eden Asım Can Gündüz, tam 18 yıl sonra tekrar Amerika'ya dönüyor. Sempatik tavırları, protest müziği, televizyon şovlarıyla ilgi çeken Gündüz, son albümü 'Bir Sevgi Eseri'yle sevenlerine romantik bir veda öpücüğü yolluyor. Vatanseverliğini, askeri, polisi, Allah'ı, Sümbül Baba ve Eyüp Sultan'ı dilinden düşürmeyen ama tüm bunlara rağmen bir türlü star olamayan müzisyen, şimdi şansını Tarkan gibi yeni dünyada deneyecek. Söylediğine göre, o zaten Amerika'da starmış.
Yıllardır uğraşıyorsunuz, bir türlü 'star' olamadınız. Oysa son zamanlarda her yerde onlardan var.
Bir numara olmaya çalmadım. Kasetlerim milyonlarca satsın, listebaşı olayım... Böyle bir kaygım olmadı. Zaten Türkiye'de yapılan pop müziğin yüzde 99'u 'yakalarsam muh muh', 'lay lay lom'. Hepsi çocuk ninnisi.
Yanlış anlamayın ama Tarkan gibi yakışıklı, Mustafa Sandal gibi enerjik biri olsaydınız şansınız olur muydu?
Şimdi ben bir kere Amerika'da müziğin yanında mayo mankenliği yapıyordum. Ve ben Türkiye'ye geldiğim zaman son derece yakışıklı, çekici bir insandım. Övünmek gibi olmasın. O zamanın hanımefendilerinin çok dikkatini çektim... Şimdi Tarkan yakışıklı bir çocuk, Mustafa genç bir çocuk, işi de çok iyi biliyor. Çok iyi bir esnaftır.
Zaten onun arabası var...
Benim arabam yok. Taksiyle gider gelirim... Türkiye'de değil kazanmak 12 milyon dolar kaybettim şimdiye kadar. Bir evim yok, bankada sanıyorum şu anda 20 milyon bir param var. Asım Can Gündüz Türkiye'de para kazanmaya çalışmadı.
Ne yapmaya çalıştınız?
Amacım Türkiye'ye hizmet vermek. Ben Amerika'da çok büyük paralar kazandım. Burada da güzel bir kıvılcım oldum, birtakım şeyler başlattım.
Asım Bey, şimdi açık konuşmak gerekirse bu hiç de tatmin edici bir yanıt değil. İnsan müzik yapıyorsa bunun geniş kitlelere ulaşmasını, listeleri ya da kaset satışlarının yüksek olmasını ister...
Ben bunu Amerika'da yaptım...
Orada listebaşı filan oldunuz yani.
Listebaşı değil de, çok genç bir yaşta çok büyük bir kariyer yaptım. Ayrıca inanın ki ben isteseydim Türkiye'de listebaşı olmasını bilirdim. Hem o kadar kafam çalışıyor, hem de yeteneğim var.
Sizi engelleyen ne oldu?
Yemin ediyorum ki hiçbir zaman amacım o değildi. 30 küsur sene Amerika'da kaldım, vatanın özlemiyle Türkiye'ye geldim. Geldiğimde derin kültürel sorunlarla karşılaştım. Bunları çözmenin tek tedavisi komünikasyon, sevgi ve hoşgörüydü. Bunlar yoktu.
Bunun tedavisi Asım Can Gündüz tarzı müzik mi diye düşündünüz?
Evet, benim müziğim rengârenk bir müziktir. Son kasetimde romantik yanımı görüyorsunuz. Türk pop müziğinin patlamasına neden olan benim ilk kasetimdir. 'Cin Gibi-Anasının Gözü', gerçi toplatıldı ama müthiş bir hareket getirdi. Benden önce mizahi rock yoktu, argo yoktu. Benim çok şeyim moda oldu.
O kasetinizde 'b... yedik' diye bir şarkınız vardı. Pek romantik bir parça değildi ama bayağı modaydı.
Şimdi o zaman bu sözün geçtiği bir yığın parça vardı. Ayrıca televizyon skeçlerinde filan da bolca kullanılıyordu. Şimdi o sözü savunmuyorum.
Nelere tepkiydi bu, çetelere, hükümete filan mı?
Bu kaseti 1988'de yapmıştım, o zaman çeteler filan yoktu. O şarkıda "Sevgiyi saygıyı unutursak gayet güzel bir şekilde b... yedik" demiştim. Sistemi eleştirmiştim.
Amerika'da neler yapacaksınız?
Pardon ne açıdan seversiniz Kenan Evren'i, ismini mi yoksa kendisini mi?
Ben Türkiye'yi kurtardığına inanıyorum. Tartışılıyor ama ben oradaydım, hiç kimse askere silah atmadı, çiçek attı. Çok daha kanlı, çok daha İdi Amin gibi olabirdi. İyisiyle kötüsüyle Türkiye'yi kurtardığına inanıyorum.
Kaset kapağınızda sizden 'Allah'ı sevdiğini ifade eden bir Müslüman, Atatürk'e hayran bir Cumhuriyet genci' diye söz ediliyor. Biraz açıklar mısınız?
O benim ağızımdan çıkmadı. Plak şirketinin benim için düşündükleri. Hem diyor Amerika'da büyümüş, hem vatansever, Cumhuriyet evladı, hem de aynı zamanda Allah'ı seviyor. Maalesef son günlerde 'Ya Allah, ya Atatürk' gibi bir çizgi çizdi bazı yobazlar.
Yine kapakta yardımsever polislere bir teşekkür gözümüze çaptı. Hangi polisler bunlar. ABD'deki polisler mi?
Türkiye'de Asım Can Gündüz olmak çok zor. Sıkıyönetimde konserler verdim,
o dönemden bu döneme polisten izin alırken benden ne bir rüşvet istendi ne bana sert bakıldı. Oradaki örnek polis arkadaşlarıma teşekkür etmek istedim.
